Antenatal Appointments are normally in the comfort and privacy of your own home. If you wish to have appointments in a more convenient location then this can be arranged. We work seven days a week and we are happy to see you in the evenings. Appointments are four weekly until 28 weeks, then fortnightly until 36 weeks, then weekly until the birth of your baby.

Antenatal Care

We carry all routine physical checks on you and your baby: blood pressure, urine, growth, and well-being of your baby.
We can organise any scans and blood tests for on the NHS or privately.

The appointment gives you the time to ask questions and for discussions on pregnancy, birth and having a newborn. The appointments can last for 1-2 hours. Your midwife provides you with books, DVDs and web site addresses to give you the confidence in your body and to help you make a plan as to how you would like your birth journey to go.

We encourage partners to be involved with appointments. It is important that father’s have the opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have. By the end of the antenatal period, you should feel safe and have trusting relationship with your midwife.

Birth

On the day of your baby’s birth, you will experience a real mixture of emotions. We will be there to support you and your partner every step of the way. If you have decided to have your baby at home we can supply you with a birthing pool, TENS machine and entonox (gas and air). We carry all emergency drugs and resuscitation equipment. We go on regular courses to keep our skills up dated.

Although it is not a legal requirement to have two midwives present at a birth, this is how we prefer to practice.
When you are in active labour regular checks are carried out on you and your baby’s well-being. This includes blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and listening regularly to baby’s heart beat. Most planned home births are straight forward, if however in the unlikely event of transferring in to hospital, the midwives will stay with you until the safe arrival of your baby.
When your baby is born, we stay with you for a couple of hours. The placenta is checked and you will be examined to see if you need any stitches. This can be done at home, with pain relief if needed, but again this is rare. Your baby will be checked and weighed. If you have decided to breast feed, support and guidance is given.
Your doctor is notified and they will carry out a newborn paediatric check. A birth notification is sent to generate your baby’s NHS number.
Before we leave, we take pride in making sure your home is clean and tidy.  We make some food for you all and tuck you up in bed.  We leave you to bond with your baby and your are happy knowing you can still call us anytime with any concerns you may have.

Postnatal Care

Care is provided for up to twenty-eight days after the birth. For the first week, your midwife will visit you every day. Any difficulties you may be experiencing will be discussed support will be given. These can be feeding, bonding, newborn behaviour etc. The remainders of the visits are tailored to meet your needs. Some women need more appointments than others do.
